Competitor Analysis

Taking a close look at your competitors is a great starting point when you’re building a content strategy. You can learn from their strengths and find opportunities in their weaknesses.

Note that when it comes to SEO, your competitors are websites that compete with you for target keywords. They may or may not be your competitors for products or services.

Once you’ve identified your top competitors (SEO research tools are great for this), do a thorough analysis:

  • Research where their website traffic comes from
  • Look for gaps in their content
  • Look closely at any featured snippets
  • Find out whether they have any broken pages
  • Closely examine their page headings and metadata

If you’re analyzing multiple competitors, this process can quickly get overwhelming. It might help to list out your top competitors, along with their major strengths and weaknesses.

Keyword Research

If you want a great SERP ranking, you need to use the right keywords. You’ll find those keywords by doing what’s called keyword research. Specialized research tools like Semrush, Moz, and Google’s Keyword Planner will show you the best keywords to integrate. 

Content Planning

Writing great SEO content isn’t enough; you also need to plan where and how to publish. And if you want to make sure your content is performing well, you need to invest in a quality content management system (CMS).

With a great strategy for publishing, you can ensure that your content is engaging your customers and reaching new ones. You’ll also ensure your site doesn’t have content gaps or redundant information.

Content planning is part of the picture, but you must also ensure you’re reaching your target audience. With a target market analysis, you’ll be able to identify valuable markets, create accurate buyer personas, and identify untapped areas of your market.

Writing Engaging and SEO-Focused Copy

To maximize your SERP rankings, you’ll need to identify target keywords. You’ll then need to use those keywords in metadata, URLs, and throughout the content itself.

A solid internal linking strategy can also improve your SERP rankings. For instance, many businesses have a so-called pillar page that links to smaller pages on the site. Internal links encourage visitors to explore your site and to (possibly) make a purchase.
